The Weizmann Institute of Science was founded in 1934 as the Sieff Research Institute, a private institution named after the family of Israel Sieff. In 1949, the institute was renamed the Weizmann Institute of Science in recognition of Chaim Weizmann, the first President of Israel and a founding member of the institute.
