The French settled Chandannagar once in the 17th century. The city was founded by French merchant Jean-Baptiste Tasnier in 1673 and was named Chandernagore after the Hindu goddess Chandi. Chandannagar was an important trading port and center of French culture in India. In 1950, Chandannagar was merged with the Indian state of West Bengal.
