Srima Dissanayake was defeated by Chandrika Kumaratunga in the 1994 presidential election. Kumaratunga, the leader of the People's Alliance, won with 62% of the vote, becoming the first woman president of Sri Lanka. Dissanayake, the candidate of the United National Party, conceded defeat after the results were announced.
