Cornwallis died in Ghazipur, India on October 5, 1805. He was the Governor-General of India from 1786 to 1793 and again from 1805 until his death. He is best known for his role in the Third Anglo-Mysore War and for his introduction of the Permanent Settlement in Bengal.
