Charles Richter, an American seismologist, developed the Richter magnitude scale, a measure of the strength of earthquakes, in California in 1935. The scale is based on the amplitude of seismic waves recorded on a seismograph and has become a fundamental tool for earthquake measurement and mitigation worldwide. Prior to the development of the Richter scale, there was no uniform way to measure and compare the strength of earthquakes.
