Through treaties, Charles I inherited the throne of Scotland upon the death of his father, James VI of Scotland in 1603. He later added the lands of the Electorate of the Palatinate through marriage in 1613, and upon his brother-in-law Frederick V's election to King of Bohemia, Charles I assumed that title as well in 1618.
