Whose heiress did Charles I marry to acquire Provence?

  • Beatrice

  • Margaret

  • Joan

  • Eleanor

Answer

Beatrice of Provence, heiress to the County of Provence and Forcalquier, was married to Charles I of Anjou, the younger brother of Louis IX of France, in 1246. In 1267 Charles acquired the title of Count of Provence and Forcalquier jure uxoris. This union was significant as it brought the wealthy lands of Provence and Forcalquier under the control of the Angevin dynasty.
