Charles IX died on May 30, 1574, at the age of 23. He was the son of King Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici, and the younger brother of Francis II. Charles IX's reign was marked by religious conflict and violence, including the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. Charles IX was succeeded by his brother Henry III.
