Charles Martel mainly combated Moorish invaders. These invaders were Muslim Berbers and Arabs from North Africa who had conquered most of the Iberian Peninsula, or Spain, in the 8th century. Martel, who was the ruler of the Franks, a Germanic people who lived in what is now France, led several successful campaigns against the Moors, and prevented them from conquering any more of France.
