On 29 November 2019, Charles Michel took over as the President of the European Council, replacing Donald Tusk, who had held the post since 2014. Michel, a former Belgian Prime Minister, was elected by the European Council with 26 votes in favour and 23 against. The ceremony took place at the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels, Belgium.
