After immigrating to the United States in 1889, Steinmetz was hired by General Electric (GE) to work on the company's alternating current (AC) electrical system. He quickly became one of the most important engineers at GE, and he was responsible for many of the company's most important inventions, including the first AC generator and the first AC motor.
