Potentiation and depotentiation are the two related phenomena discovered by Charles Scott Sherrington about signal transmission between neurons. He found that a brief burst of nerve impulses at a synapse could strengthen the response of the postsynaptic cell to subsequent impulses. This phenomenon is known as potentiation. Conversely, if a series of weak stimuli is repeated, the response of the postsynaptic cell to subsequent stimuli decreases.
