Charles le Chauve, meaning Charles the Bald, was the King of West Francia from 843 until his death in 877. He was a grandson of Charlemagne and the son of Louis the Pious. He inherited the western portion of the Carolingian Empire following the division of the empire by the Treaty of Verdun in 843.
