Charles VII's son Maximilian I became the ruler of Bavaria in 1506. Maximilian was a skilled diplomat and administrator, and he expanded the power of Bavaria by annexing neighboring territories. He also married into the Hapsburg family, which gave him control over much of the Holy Roman Empire.
