The island of Öland was the de facto Duchy of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a French marshal who would later become King Charles XIV John of Sweden. After the assassination of King Gustav III in 1792, Bernadotte was appointed as the guardian and regent of the young Crown Prince, Gustavus Adolphus.
