Charlotte Bronte was born in 1816. She was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Bronte sisters who achieved critical and popular success in the mid-nineteenth century. Her works include Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley (1849), Villette (1853), and The Professor (1857). She died in 1855, aged 38, from tuberculosis.
