Chester William Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg, Texas in 1885. He attended the United States Naval Academy and served in the Navy during World War I. He was appointed Chief of Naval Operations in 1942 and led the United States Pacific Fleet during World War II. Nimitz was a brilliant strategist and tactician and was instrumental in the Allied victory in the Pacific.
