Ed Balls was appointed Shadow Home Secretary in 2009. He was a member of the Labour Party and had previously served as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. Balls was a strong critic of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government's policies on crime and immigration. He also accused the government of being too soft on crime and of failing to protect the public.
