Barnard returned to South Africa in 1958. He had left the country in 1956 to pursue his medical studies in the United States. After completing his studies, he returned to South Africa to begin his career as a cardiac surgeon. He quickly became one of the world's leading heart surgeons and performed the first successful human-to-human heart transplant in 1967.
