Christian IV was 19 years old when he began his personal rule of Denmark. He had been regent since the age of 15, when his father, Christian III, died. Christian IV was a popular ruler, and he is credited with strengthening Denmark's economy and military. He also expanded the country's territory, adding Norway and parts of Sweden to the Danish realm.
