Christian VIII of Denmark was married to Charlotte Frederica of Mecklenburg-Schwerin from 1766 until her death in 1784. They had six children together, three of whom survived to adulthood. The eldest, Frederick VI, succeeded his father to the throne in 1808. Charlotte Frederica was a popular figure in Denmark and her death was mourned by many.
