Christian Wolff was ennobled as Christian Freiherr von Wolff in 1745. The title of Freiherr was given to Wolff by King Frederick the Great of Prussia, who was impressed by Wolff's work in logic and metaphysics. Wolff had been a professor at the University of Halle since 1707, and he had a close relationship with the Prussian government.
