CBE is an abbreviation for Commander of the British Empire, a civil honour in the United Kingdom and some other Commonwealth realms. It is the second highest rank of the Order of the British Empire (OBE being the third, and Knight Bachelor the fourth). The CBE was established in 1917 by King George V, and is awarded for distinguished service to the community.
