Metzelder retired from professional football in 2012, at the age of 33. He had spent the previous three seasons at Hannover 96, after a short spell with Real Madrid. He had previously played for Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 and Real Madrid. Metzelder was capped 59 times by Germany, and was part of the team that won the 2002 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship.
