Chuck Yeager was the first person in history to break the sound barrier in level flight. On October 14, 1947, Yeager piloted the Bell X-1 rocket plane at Mach 1.06, or about 700 miles per hour. This feat made Yeager an international hero and helped to usher in the era of supersonic flight.
