Yeager served in the Soviet Union during the Cold War as an exchange pilot. In 1963, Yeager was sent to the Soviet Union to fly with Soviet pilots and test new aircraft. He flew several different types of Soviet aircraft, including the MiG-21, MiG-25, and Tu-128. Yeager also flew with Soviet cosmonauts and helped them train for their space missions.
