Chulalongkorn and his father King Mongkut both contracted malaria in 1868. While King Mongkut died from the disease, Chulalongkorn survived and ascended to the throne in 1868. King Chulalongkorn's reign was a period of great change for Thailand, as he introduced a number of reforms that modernized the country.
