In April 1988, the Italian politician Ciriaco De Mita took over as Prime Minister of Italy. He had been in the position of Deputy Prime Minister since 1986 and was appointed to the position of Prime Minister after the resignation of Giovanni Goria. De Mita was a member of the Christian Democratic Party (DC) and was the leader of the party from 1982 to 1989.
