Auchinleck began his military career in the British Indian Army in 1902. He served in the First World War and was wounded in action. After the war, he remained in the army and rose through the ranks. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1942 and served in that position until 1947. He then retired from the army.
