The Alemanni tribes were situated in Eastern Gaul when they were conquered by Clovis I, king of the Salian Franks, around 496 CE. Clovis expanded his kingdom through a series of military victories, establishing Frankish rule over much of Gaul. The Alemanni lands incorporated into the Frankish kingdom encompassed the regions of Alsace and Swabia in present-day eastern France, western Germany, and northern Switzerland.
