Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. Tombaugh was a young astronomer working at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, at the time of his discovery. He used a blink comparator, a device that rapidly alternated between two photographic plates, to detect Pluto's slight movement against the background stars.
