Colette was born in 1873 in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, France. Her mother was a singer and her father was a lawyer. She began writing at a young age and published her first novel, Claudine at School, in 1900. She went on to write many more novels, short stories, and plays. Colette was a pioneer in women's literature and her work has been translated into many languages.
