Despite Columba's religious commitment, Irish politics remained a part of his life. In particular, he was involved in the dispute between the Uí Néill and the Dál Riata, two Irish dynasties. He mediated between the two groups, and even met with the Uí Néill king Niall Caille to discuss a possible peace agreement.
