Conrad gave up his Canadian citizenship in order to accept British peerage. This is because British law at the time did not allow for people to hold dual citizenship. Conrad was born in Poland, but moved to Canada with his family when he was young. He became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1886. In 1919, he was offered a British peerage, which he accepted.
