Gaul was the prefecture that Constans gained from Constantine II. After Constantine I's death in 337 CE, the Roman Empire was divided among his three sons. Constantine II received Gaul, Britain, and Hispania. However, in 340 CE, Constans defeated Constantine II in battle and took control of Gaul. This gave Constans control of the westernmost part of the Roman Empire.
