French naturalist Constantine Samuel Rafinesque was born in Galata, Ottoman Empire (present-day Istanbul, Turkey) in 1783. His father was a French merchant and his mother was a Greek woman. Rafinesque spent his early years in France and Italy before emigrating to the United States in 1802. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1814.
