Corneliu Zelea Codreanu and his organization assassinated Premier Ion G. Duca and Mihai Stelescu, viewing them as corrupt. Duca had implemented a number of reforms, including land redistribution and measures to protect workers, and was seen as a threat to the interests of the landed gentry and the Romanian Orthodox Church. Stelescu was a former member of Codreanu's organization who had defected and was seen as a traitor.
