Cosimo di Giovanni de' Medici was an Italian statesman and banker who ruled the Republic of Florence as a de facto dictator from 1434 to 1464. He was the first of the Medici family to hold political power in Florence and is credited with laying the foundations for the family's future dominance of the city.
