AFC Bournemouth was founded in 1899 as Boscombe St. John's FC. The club joined the Kent County League in 1904. They won the league title in 1910, and in 1912 the club was elected to the Southern League. The club changed its name to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1915, and in 1923 the club was elected to the Football League Third Division.
