Saitama Seibu Lions was the first Japanese team that Matsuzaka played for. He joined the Lions in 1999 after graduating from Yokohama High School. During his time with the Lions, Matsuzaka quickly established himself as one of the top pitchers in Japan, winning the Pacific League Rookie of the Year Award in 1999 and the Sawamura Award in 2001.
