Pope Damasus II was born as Poppo de' Curagnoni in a noble family in Ravenna. He was a monk at the Abbey of Pomposa and abbot of the monastery of Santa Maria in Porto, Ravenna, when Pope Victor III appointed him bishop of Pavia. Pope Adrian IV called him to Rome in 1154 as a legate and named him cardinal-priest of Santa Prassede.
