  • No

  • Yes, Quasicrystals

  • Yes, Quantum Physics

  • Yes, Gene Editing

Answer

In 1982, Dan Shechtman was studying aluminum-manganese alloys under an electron microscope when he discovered an unexpected structure. The regular arrangement of atoms in crystals was disrupted by a pattern of fivefold symmetry, which was not thought to be possible. This discovery opened up a new field of study, called quasicrystals, which are materials with an ordered atomic structure that is not periodic.
