Answer

In 1982, Dan Shechtman was conducting experiments in an electron microscope. He was studying an alloy of aluminum and manganese when he observed a crystal with a 10-fold symmetry. This was not possible according to the laws of crystallography at the time. It was thought that all crystals had a 3-fold, 4-fold, or 6-fold symmetry.
