Gajdusek was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976 for his discovery of viruses that cause kuru and other transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). He was the first to describe kuru, a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, in the Fore people of Papua New Guinea in the 1950s.
