Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit spent most of his life in the Dutch Republic. He was born in Gdańsk, then part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but in 1688 he moved to the Netherlands, where he spent the rest of his life. In the Netherlands, Fahrenheit worked as a glassblower and instrument maker. He also invented the mercury thermometer, which is still used today.
