Dawda Jawara, the first President of The Gambia, received his veterinary education from the University of Glasgow. He graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1959. Jawara then worked as a veterinarian in the Gambia before entering politics. He was elected President in 1970 and served until 1994, when he was overthrown in a coup.
