During World War II, Slayton flew combat missions as a pilot. He was assigned to the 364th Fighter Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group, which was part of the Eighth Air Force. Slayton flew P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs on missions over Germany and France. He was credited with shooting down three enemy aircraft and damaging several others.
