Djibril Cissé started his career at AC Arles at the age of 8. He was discovered by former player Bruno Martini, who was the club's goalkeeping coach at the time. Martini was impressed by Cissé's physical strength and technical ability, and he encouraged him to pursue a career in football. Cissé spent six years at AC Arles, before moving to Auxerre in 1998.
