As a member of the federal posse, they found Frank Stilwell lying in wait as Virgil boarded a train for California. Virgil was one of the three lawmen who had brought in the Clanton gang. Stilwell was part of that gang and was waiting for an opportunity to get revenge. Virgil was shot and wounded, but he survived.
