On June 10, 2003, Dominican pitcher Domingo Guzmán struck out 18 consecutive batters, setting the world record. He struck out the side in the second, third, and fourth innings, then fanned the first two batters in the fifth before issuing a walk. He struck out the next nine batters to break the previous record of 17, which was set by Art Nehf in 1926.
